Senior Lieutenant General, Mig-21 Pilot – Vietnam People’s Armed Forces Hero
General Pham Thanh Ngan, Commander of the 371st Air Force Division, is a MiG-21 pilot who shot down eight American aircraft. He held the position of Commander of the Air Defense Force from 1989 to 1996 and served as the Chief of the General Department of Politics before retiring in 2002.

Pham Thanh Ngan told Nguyen Van Coc how he shot down an F-105F flown by Major Oscar Moise Dardeau and Captain Edward William Lehnhoff. That same day Coc shot down Lieutenant Colonel Wiliam Redd’s F-105D on November 18, 1967.
